Tanuja was married to the late director Shomu Mukherjee.
She made her big debut in 1950 with Hamari Beti as a child artist.
Among many more well-known films, some of her best-known works include Do Chor, Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi, Jewel Thief, Antony Firingee, Jeene Ki Raah, Rajkumari, etc.
She received the 1969 Filmfare Award for 'Paisa Ya Pyaar's' Best Supporting Actress.
Tanuja is a mother of two female actors: Kajol and Taneesha.
Kajol in an interview said, “My mum and I always had the best relationship and it has only gone on from strength to strength."
In response to that interview, Tanuja said, " “I have brought them up. I trained them. That’s a mother’s duty to do, teach them how to think for themselves."
