The Indian Star Tortoise (Geochelone elegans) is a unique species known for its star-like patterns on the shell.

This species is native to the northwest and southeast regions of India and is highly regarded for its distinctive appearance.

The star-shaped markings on the shell make it one of the most visually striking and sought-after tortoises in the world.

Unfortunately, it faces severe threats due to illegal wildlife trade and habitat destruction.

The species is listed as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List and is under legal protection in India under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

Despite being protected, the illegal trade continues to target these rare tortoises, especially for the exotic pet market, putting their survival at risk.

They are commonly found in the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Tamil Nadu.
