Taliban can't use Islam for inhuman treatment of women

Uzma Khatoon The world is witnessing a deeply troubling development in Afghanistan as the Taliban formalises a legal system that appears to push society backwards by centuries. A recent 90-page document titled the “Criminal Procedure Code for Courts” (Mahakumu Jazaai Osulnama), reportedly signed by Taliban Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, has raised serious alarm among human rights observers. While the Taliban presents thi...

Muslims must read Qur’an from women’s perspectives

Uzma Khatoon Do Muslims read the Qur’an directly, or do we read it through layers of interpretation? This question is important today. Most of us do not approach the Qur’an alone. We read translations, listen to sermons, and study explanations written by scholars. For many centuries, these scholars were almost always men. As a result, our understanding of the Qur’an has largely been shaped by male perspectives. The Qu...

Women's rights in Quran must be seen in the context of pre-Islamic Arab

Uzma Khatoon To understand Islam's vision of family and women’s rights, the Qur’anic message must be read with its original social context. This revelation addressed a society plagued by a tribal hierarchy, male dominance, and social inequality. In pre-Islamic Arabia (Jahiliyyah), women were often treated as property, and practices like female infanticide reflected a system that valued strength and lineage over human dignit...

Debate and reasoning are intrinsic to Islam

Uzma Khatoon The recent debate between Mufti Shamail Nadwi and Javed Akhtar has reignited an ancient conversation about the existence of God, presenting it as a clash between the "logical necessity" of faith and the "sceptical demand" for empirical evidence. While this modern exchange felt like a decisive showdown, it is a continuation of a vibrant, thousand-year-old Islamic intellectual tradition. Historically, the...

Muslims must dispel misgivings about term 'kafir'

Uzma Khatoon In today's world, the word Kafir has been stripped of its theological depth and weaponised as a tool for political mobilisation, social media vitriol, and communal hostility. It's frequently cited as definitive proof that Islam bifurcates the world into "believers" and "enemies." This reductive perception is fueled by a toxic mix of primetime television debates, viral misinformation, and hate-driven...

Polygamy: A religious privilege or a social injustice?

Uzma Khatoon In the evolving discourse on Indian Muslim society, the issue of polygamy stands as a critical intersection of faith, law, and social justice. For decades, this issue has been debated within courtrooms, religious seminaries, and the drawing rooms of ordinary families. However, as we move into the 21st century, the conversation is shifting from a purely religious debate to one centred on human rights, constitutional morality, a...

This tension has transcended abstract intellectual discourse and is now visibly ...

Why India's syncretic past matters today more than ever

Uzma Khatoon When history is used as a weapon to divide, it's crucial to remember India's shared past. The real story is not "difference and conflict" but a deep "Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb." The conflict-focused narrative, which wrongly treats Hindus and Muslims as opposing groups, is a distortion and must be challenged. Instead, this analysis builds upon the foundational ideas of scholars like Tara Chand. His se...
