Located in the heart of Shillong's bustling Police Bazaar, RB (Rahim Baksh) Store has been adding flavours to the culinary tradition of Shillong for more than seven decades.
Founded in 1950 by visionary Rahim Baksh, who emigrated from West Bengal, the bakery quickly became the epicenter of Shillong’s food and cooking scene.
Realising that there was a demand for quality sweets in the predominantly Christian state of Meghalaya, Rahim Baksh opened the first bakery store in Meghalaya. His decision was the right one. In no time the aroma of freshly baked goodies attracted Shillong residents and the store had a great footfall and fan following.
The bakery is a place to go for its soft bread, delicious pastries, and cakes served as staples at local events, celebrations, and gatherings.

Rahim Baksh’s commitment to maintaining quality made RB Store a favorite establishment of all. Over time, his sons Hashibuddin Ahmed and Qutubuddin Ahmed took over the business.
The bakery thrived under the leadership of his sons. They expanded the bakery’s menu and maintained the quality and transparency of its products. The freshness and distinct flavors of the RB Store bread become household names in the city.
The tradition continues today under the supervision of Zaid Ahmed, grandson of Rahim Baksh. Talking about the family's journey, Zaid said, "Our family migrated from West Bengal. Seeing opportunities and potential here, our forefathers opened this store in 1950 and then RB Store became the sweet shop known to all."
His commitment to preserving the family’s legacy by keeping up with contemporary tastes ensures that the bakery remains as relevant and visitor-friendly as ever.
Located opposite the historic Bijou Cinema Hall, the RB Store has been a silent witness to the transformation of Police Bazaar from a quaint market to a vibrant commercial hub.
Despite rapid modernization and the influx of new businesses, the bakery has retained its uniqueness and continues to offer fine-quality bread, cakes, and pastries to both locals and tourists. Key to its longevity and success is its ability to combine tradition with current consumer preferences.
For many Shillong residents, a visit to the Police Bazaar is incomplete without visiting the RB Store. Whether it’s fresh bread or hot pastries or purchasing cakes for special occasions, this store remains an integral part of the Northeast town’s culinary scene.
The success of RB stores has paved the way for other bakeries in Shillong. Another son of Rahim Baksh set up a famous bakery shop next to the RB store.
The Muslim community has made a significant contribution to the bakery sector in Shillong. Many Muslim entrepreneurs, like Rahim Baksh, witnessed the potential of supplying high-quality bakery products to the city’s residents several years ago.
Their efforts have not only introduced new flavors and techniques but have also helped shape Shillong’s rich and evolving food culture.

Apart from RB Store and its sister bakery establishment, Shillong boasts a variety of bakeries. They each have their own identity and distinct cuisine. The presence of Muslim bakers alongside indigenous Khasi and Nepali-owned establishments illuminate the city’s multicultural spirit and common passion for fine food products.
