As millions of Muslims across India observe Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, cities nationwide are filled with solemn processions, prayers, and acts of remembrance. This month holds particular significance as it commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala.
The historic 8th Muharram procession, banned for nearly three decades, has resumed in Srinagar. This is the second time the procession has been allowed since the ban was lifted in 2023 after 34 years. During the 8th Muharram procession, young children were seen serving mourners of Imam Hussain (a.s.) at multiple locations on the way to Dalgate. The atmosphere is marked by a deep sense of reflection, with participants reciting elegies and remembering the sacrifices made by Imam Hussain and his followers.
