Darul Uloom, an Islamic seminary based in Deoband, Uttar Pradesh, has called the heads of some 250 major Madrassas in Uttar Pradesh to discuss the government’s plan to survey the unrecognized and private Islamic schools.

The conference will be held in Deoband, Saharanpur, on 24 September.

The spokesperson of the Darul Uloom Ashraf Usmani said, the purpose of the conference is to discuss and impact of the recent directive of the government on the survey of madrassas in the state. The idea is to get proper feedback on the issue from the heads of madrassas.

The Uttar Pradesh government had recently asked all the district magistrates to conduct a survey to identify unrecognized madrassas and it also created a political storm. Several minority organizations have called it an attempt to target the Muslim community.

However, many Maulanas or clerics come out openly in support of the government’s efforts to streamline the Madrassa education. However, they have asked the government to give details about the manner and the purpose of the survey.

Maulana Tauqir Raza Khan of Bareilly said, “if the government wants to collect data on madrasas then why should anyone have problems?

However, the state government also explains a few things like whether it is fulfilling its responsibility towards the recognized madrassas. Maulana Ishaq Gora, the Deoband-based patron of Jamiat Dawatul Muslimeen, said, the instructions of the government are clear. The survey pertains to madrassas which are not recognized. Those who follow the rules have nothing to fear.

According to the data of the Uttar Pradesh Madrasa Education Board, there are more than 16,000 recognized madrasas in the state. A day earlier, a meeting was organized in Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind in protest against the government's decision to survey madrasas.
