As millions of Muslims across India observe Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, cities nationwide are filled with solemn processions, prayers, and acts of remembrance. This month holds particular significance as it commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala.

The historic 8th Muharram procession, banned for nearly three decades, has resumed in Srinagar. This is the second time the procession has been allowed since the ban was lifted in 2023 after 34 years. A user, Mohammad Abbas, posted on X, "Historical 8th #Muharram Procession Which was banned for around 3 decades begins again in #Srinagar ,this is Second time Muharram Procession was allowed after ban was lifted in 2023 after 34 Years."

During the 8th Muharram procession, young children were seen serving mourners of Imam Hussain (a.s.) at multiple locations on the way to Dalgate. The same X user, Mohammad Abbas, took to the social media and posted a video with a caption, "Incredible Scenes from #Srinagar Kashmir. In Delhi, thousands gathered at historical sites like the Jama Masjid, participating in Tazia processions adorned with intricate designs. The atmosphere is marked by a deep sense of reflection, with participants reciting elegies and remembering the sacrifices made by Imam Hussain and his followers. An X user, Syed Mohammad Qasim, posted on social media.

In Lucknow, the traditional 'Mourning Majlis' attracted significant attention. Scholars and speakers recounted the events of Karbala, emphasizing themes of justice, sacrifice, and faith. The city’s rich cultural heritage was on display, with artisans showcasing beautifully crafted Tazia, a representation of the mausoleum of Imam Hussain. An X user, Jafar Naqvi Hassan, posted a video of Bada Imambada on X.
