Union Home Minister Amit shah said " I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the historic decision to confer the highest Bharat Ratna award.to Dr. MS Swaminathan".
He said that honoring the eminent Dr. MS Swaminathan with the Bharat Ratna is a testament to the sense of gratitude our nation has for the great men who laid the foundation for progress.

He also added that Dr MS Swaminathan was a visionary who revolutionised agricultural science, a stalwart whose contribution to India will always be etched in golden letters.

In 1986, he received the Albert Einstein World Award of Science, and in 1987, he was the inaugural laureate of the World Food Prize, often considered to be an agricultural Nobel Prize.
