Azim Premji, the founder of software company Wipro is India’s most generous philanthropist; he donates Rs 27 crore daily!
Premji’s daily donation is more than the annual turnover of many companies. In the current year, Premji has already donated Rs 9,713 crore.
Being the biggest philanthropist of India, Premji donations have risen by one-fourth, as per the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2021. This organization releases the list of big donors of the country every year.
According to this list, Shiv Nadar of HCL is second among donors with a contribution of Rs 1,263 crore.
Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries, the richest Indian, is listed in the third position with a contribution of Rs 577 crore.
Kumar Mangalam Birla donated Rs 377 crore while the second richest India Gautam Adani is at the eighth position in the list with a donation of Rs 130 crore for disaster relief.
Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani's ranking has improved. "Social thinking" was identified as the primary cause behind it, he donated Rs 183 crore for philanthropy.
“At present, most of the money is being given for raising the standards of education and healthcare,” Anas Rehman Junaid, Managing Director and Chief Researcher, Hurun India said, “Nilekani has made a really interesting contribution. He said that as the age profile of people below 40 years of age changes. Many of them being self-made also present an optimistic picture.”
There are some new entrants to the list that includes the biggest stock investor Rakesh Jhunjunwala. He donated a quarter of his total earnings, or Rs 50 crore, in the Financial year 2021, for education efforts.
According to a statement, Jhunjhunwala, who recently had a personal meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is one of the founders of Ashoka University.
Brothers Nitin and Nikhil Kamath, who pledged Rs 750 crore over the next few years to support individuals, organizations, and companies working on climate change solutions are ranked 35th on the list.
A M Naik, former chairman of engineering major Larsen & Toubro, is ranked 11th on the list with a donation of Rs 112 crore. He has promised to give 75 percent of his income for charitable purposes. The top ten donors include the Hinduja family, Bajaj family, Anil Agarwal, and Burman family.
Nine women also find their names on the list. These include Rohini Nilekani's donation of Rs 69 crore. USV's Leena Gandhi Tiwari donation of Rs 24 crore, and Thermax's Anu Agha’s Rs 20 crore.
Based on the residence, Mumbai leads the list with 31 percent. It is followed by New Delhi at 17 percent and Bengaluru at 10 percent. The pharma industry has the largest number of philanthropists, followed by automobiles and auto components and software and services.
