Sambhal town in Uttar Pradesh saw Hindus shower rose petals on Muslims returning from congregational Eid namaz at Eidgah as a sign of goodwill and love.

This was unexpected as the town has been a flashpoint of tensions between the two communities over several months since a youth was murdered for allegedly throwing off a green flag.

The town was under heavy security cover and yet people offered prayers in mosques, and at Idgah; they hugged and wished each other on the occasion.

This seems to be a goodwill gesture initiated by civil society to deflate tensions and spread positivity for the major Muslim festival.

Senior officers of police and administration were out in the field and closely monitoring the situation. Officers also interacted with people and wished them a joyous Eid.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and minority affairs minister Danish Ansari wished people.

Yogi said on Eid on this festival, everyone should take a pledge to further strengthen goodwill and social harmony.

Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi of the Islamic Center of India also extended Eid greetings to the countrymen. He said that the day of Eid is a reward from Allah for the fasting people. Along with praying for yourself and your family, pray for the progress and security of the country.
