Political leaders from across the spectrum paid heartfelt tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram on his birth anniversary, observed nationwide as Samta Diwas, honoring the veteran freedom fighter, former Deputy Prime Minister, and a towering figure in India’s fight for social justice.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, along with senior Congress leaders, visited the Babu Jagjivan Ram memorial to pay homage. Taking to X, he wrote, "Respectful tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram ji on his birth anniversary. Babu ji dedicated his entire life for the rights of the deprived, the exploited and Dalits. He strengthened the democratic and constitutional values of the country by strengthening their rights and participation. His thoughts and struggles will always inspire us."

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge echoed these sentiments, calling him a “great hero of equality” and stating, “Babu ji fought selflessly for justice and the uplift of the weak, oppressed and backward sections of society. He made an unforgettable contribution to strengthening parliamentary democracy.”

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Babu Jagjivan Ram’s daughter, highlighted the continued relevance of Samta Diwas, saying, “Samta means everyone should be equal. There's a lot of inequality and discrimination in this country. Celebrating Samta Diwas sends a message not just to the nation but to the world — that discrimination must end.”

Bihar Congress President Rajesh Kumar emphasized Babu Jagjivan Ram’s role in the Samta Andolan (Equality Movement), describing it as “truly pioneering” and vital for uplifting marginalized communities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute via a post on X, stating, “Respectful tributes to former Deputy Prime Minister of the country Babu Jagjivan Ram on his birth anniversary. His lifelong struggle for the rights of the deprived and the oppressed will always remain a source of inspiration.”

In a video message, PM Modi reflected on Babuji’s vast legacy, recalling his leadership during the 1971 India-Pakistan war as Defence Minister, and his commitment to a strong and democratic India. “During the Emergency, when people were being arrested, he emerged as a voice of strength and encouraged people not to fear,” the Prime Minister said.

Telangana Chief Minister K. Revanth Reddy also paid his respects, calling Babuji a symbol of determination. “Born in a poor family, he rose to the highest positions through unwavering dedication and selfless service,” he remarked.
