In the aftermath of the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, a flurry of high-level meetings is underway in the national capital, signaling the Indian government's resolve to deliver a strong response. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan, and the chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force convened at the Prime Minister's residence on Tuesday in a key strategic discussion.

The urgency and frequency of the meetings suggest that the government is preparing a significant countermeasure. Prime Minister Modi, who condemned the Pahalgam attack as “barbaric,” has vowed that the perpetrators and their backers will not be spared. “The blood of the entire country is boiling,” he had stated in a tweet following the attack.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Union Home Ministry held a closed-door meeting with the chiefs of major paramilitary forces, including the BSF, CRPF, CISF, SSB, Assam Rifles, and the NSG. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired the session, which focused on internal security and border preparedness.

On Wednesday, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by PM Modi, is scheduled to meet for the second time since the Pahalgam incident. A separate meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) is also slated for the same day.

The week has seen a cascade of strategic consultations. On Monday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi to assess troop readiness and ground-level actions post-attack. Later, Singh held a 40-minute closed-door meeting with PM Modi, coinciding with India’s finalization of a deal with France to procure 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets for the Indian Navy — a move seen as part of a broader defence reinforcement agenda.

The CDS General Anil Chauhan also held a crucial 40-minute meeting with the Defence Minister at his residence on Sunday, reportedly briefing him on operational strategies and counterterrorism measures. Simultaneously, BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chaudhary held discussions with Home Ministry officials.

While official statements have remained tight-lipped on the details of a potential retaliation, the scale and intensity of the meetings suggest that a calibrated and possibly robust military or diplomatic response is being formulated.
