Professor Mazhar Asif has been appointed Vice Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), a central University, in Delhi.

Prof Asif was at the School of Languages, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. 

His area of expertise is Sufism and medieval history of India.

The order of his appointment was signed by President Droupadi Murmu soon after her return from a visit abroad.

The appointment will be for a term of five years from the date on which he assumes charge of his post or till he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.

Jamia Millia Islamia is known for its diverse academic programs and research activities. The appointment of Professor Asif will prove to be important for the development and progress of this university.

His responsibilities as Vice-Chancellor will include handling the administrative work of the university, formulating academic policies, and promoting dialogue between students and faculty. His arrival is expected to boost innovation and research.

Professor Asif believes that education is not just the accumulation of knowledge but it is a tool for social change. He believes in motivating students and making them responsible citizens of the society.
