New Delhi: Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested Iqbal Singh, a wanted accused in the Red Fort violence case, from Hoshiarpur in Punjab.

Singh carrying a bounty of Rs 50,000 on his head, was arrested on Tuesday night. It comes a day after key accused Deep Sidhu's arrest, who has been sent on a seven-day police custody. Sidhu will now be interrogated by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) besides the Delhi Police special Cell, some news agencies said.

Forty-five-year-old Iqbal Singh hails from Ludhiana. He along with Sidhu and others were part of the R-Day tractor rally that breached course and created ruckus in the national capital. His videos went viral on social media where he was purportedly heard threatening cops on duty and inciting protesters to go on a rampage.

Following the rampage, the Delhi Police announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh each on Deep Sidhu, Jugraj Singh, Gurjot Singh and Gurjant Singh; and Rs 50,000 each on Jajbir Singh, Buta Singh, Sukhdev Singh and Iqbal Singh for their alleged involvement in the violence that saw at least one person die and several injured, including policemen.

Police will now probe where Iqbal Singh went after January 26 and who all provided cover to him. Those who provided shelter to him and others could also face legal action.

Punjabi actor-cum-activist Deep Sidhu was arrested from Karnal in Haryana. Another co-accused Sukhdev Singh was earlier arrested from Chandigarh.

On January 26, India’s Republic Day, a section of protesting farmers broke police barricades, ran over Delhi roads with their tractors, reached Red Fort (India’s freedom of Independence) and hoisted a Sikh religious flag over it after seriously injuring over 400 police personnel.

Indians saw in horror on their television sets as the events unfolded on the national holiday. Many protestors ran amok over the city with swords in hand.

Following this, the administration cut off internet to bring the law-and-order situation under control, however which resulted in inconvenience to ordinary citizens as well.

Protesters have been sitting-in at different borders of the national capital since November 26 against the three newly enacted farm laws: Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. These laws, they claim, will lower farmers’ income from farming.

IB to interrogate Deep Sidhu

Intelligence Bureau (IB) will interrogate actor-turned-activist Deep Sidhu on Wednesday, who has been sent to 7-day police custody for his alleged role in the R-Day violence.

Questions will be posed to Sidhu regarding the farmers' agitation leading to violence across the national capital on January 26. He is currently in Crime Branch's custody. Delhi Police Special Cell will also interrogate Sidhu, sources said.

Delhi Police Special-Cell team after arresting Sidhu on Tuesday produced him before a Delhi court seeking 10-day police custody but Court has sent him to 7-day police custody.

Delhi Police told Metropolitan Magistrate Prigya Gupta that Deep Sidhu was the main instigator. He allegedly instigated the mob not to follow the permitted route of the Kisan parade and to breach barricades with tractors on January 26.

Delhi Police told the Court that there is also video evidence to show that Sidhu was entering Red Fort with supporters carrying lathis and flags.

Delhi Police also told the court that he was at the rampart where the flag was unfurled.

The name of gangster Lakka Sadana is also included in the R-Day violence FIR.
