Dr. Salim Ali, widely revered as the “Bird Man of India,” transformed ornithology and bird conservation in India, leaving an indelible mark on the study of birds and environmental awareness. Born on November 12, 1896, in Mumbai, Salim Ali’s passion for birds emerged early. What began as a childhood fascination developed into a lifelong pursuit that would profoundly influence India’s understanding of its avian life and conservation practices.

Trained in ornithology in Germany, Ali’s meticulous research and fieldwork set him apart. His groundbreaking book, The Book of Indian Birds, published in 1941, introduced generations of Indians to birdwatching and remains a key reference for enthusiasts and researchers alike. Ali’s pioneering work in cataloging India’s diverse bird species, documenting their habits and habitats, brought structure to a field that was previously scattered and poorly documented.

Ali’s expertise extended beyond research to conservation advocacy. He spearheaded efforts to protect critical bird habitats, including the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary (now Keoladeo National Park), one of Asia’s most significant bird refuges. When the Silent Valley rainforest in Kerala faced threats from dam projects in the 1970s, Ali’s impassioned campaign helped secure the region’s protection, preserving it as a rich biodiversity hotspot. He was also instrumental in founding the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), one of India’s oldest and most respected conservation organizations.

Throughout his life, Ali received numerous honors, including the Padma Bhushan in 1958 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1976, India’s highest civilian awards. His contributions brought Indian ornithology to the world stage, influencing policies that balanced development with ecological preservation.
