President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday emphasised the need for developing speciality medical centres across Bihar, stating that such institutions would not only benefit people who currently travel outside the state for treatment but also contribute to the local economy.
Speaking at the centenary celebrations of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), the President highlighted the hardships faced by patients seeking treatment in other cities, including delays in medical care, difficulties with food and accommodation, and disruptions to employment.
She pointed out that the reliance on medical institutions in major cities overburdens their healthcare systems and stressed that decentralising quality medical facilities across the country would help address these challenges.
Noting that cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Indore have emerged as hubs for specialised medical treatment, President Murmu urged Bihar to develop similar centres.
"This would not only provide good medical treatment to the people of Bihar but will also boost the economy of the state," she said, adding that PMCH and its alumni could play a key role in this effort.
Calling PMCH an invaluable part of Bihar’s heritage, she reflected on its rich legacy of blending antiquity with modern advancements.
"PMCH was among the best hospitals in Asia. The alumni of this institute have brought glory to themselves and PMCH in the country and abroad on the strength of their talent, service, and dedication," she said.
The President also underscored the significance of technology in modern medicine, urging healthcare professionals to embrace advancements like Artificial Intelligence and robotics, which are making medical procedures more precise and efficient.

The event was attended by Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
