The family of Sitaram Yechury, CPI(M) General Secretary, who died at the age of 72, has donated his body for teaching purposes and Medical research.

Yechury is survived by his wife Seema Chisti, who is the editor of the Wire portal and his daughter from an earlier marriage. His daughter, Akhila Yechury teaches in a UK University while his son Ashish Yechury passed away during Covid-19 pandemic.

Yechury, a two time MP of the Rajya Sabha passed away at 3:05 pm on Tuesday of Pneumonia..

Yechury was admitted to the AIIMS in Delhi on August 19, 2024. He had been first admitted to the emergency ward and then shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

AIIMS announced the receipt of Yechury's body in a handout issued to the press:

Sitaram Yechury was a prominent Indian politician who held a seat in the CPM politburo for 32 years and served as the party's General Secretary from 2015. Additionally, he represented West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, from 2005 to 2017.
