Gallbladder stones, or cholelithiasis, are often painful and lead to surgical intervention in many cases. However, clinical dietitian Ridhima Gupta suggests that, in certain situations, natural remedies and dietary changes can help manage the condition and even delay the need for surgery.

According to Dr. Gupta, patients with uncomplicated gallstones and no underlying metabolic disorders can potentially benefit from a targeted diet. She recommends avoiding processed and spicy foods, staying physically active, and incorporating certain foods known to aid gallstone management.

Key Dietary Recommendations:

Apple Cider Vinegar helps manage acid levels, which can address one of the root causes of gallstones, hypochlorhydria.

Believed to soften gallstones, drinking a glass daily for 4–5 days may help in their removal.

Known to reduce LDL cholesterol levels, artichokes can help dissolve cholesterol-based gallstones.

Additionally, Gupta mentions the "Gall Bladder Cleanse" diet, which involves consuming apple juice, vegetable juice, and olive oil with lime juice. This approach is strict and should be reconsidered for individuals with diabetes.

For pain relief, she also suggests using castor oil packs, a traditional remedy applied to the abdomen.

Can Pineapple Help?

Pineapple, rich in bromelain and ascorbic acid, can reduce inflammation in the organs, helping to relieve pain and irritation. While it may help postpone surgery, Gupta advises caution for patients with diabetes or high potassium levels.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Gupta warns that surgery may become essential if symptoms like upper abdominal pain, black stools, jaundice, or diagnostic findings like multiple or large stones occur. In such cases, timely intervention is crucial.

While dietary changes can help manage gallstones, surgery should be considered when symptoms worsen or complications arise.
