From Deepika Padukone’s pencil hack for good diction to diaphragmatic breathing for a powerful, steady voice, people swear by various things when it comes to speech clarity and articulation. But have you ever tried Water Tongue Trills? “As an actor and coach, I know how frustrating it can be when your voice doesn’t align with your thoughts. That’s why I swear by these two game-changing exercises:

“Diaphragmatic Breathing – It’s the foundation of a powerful, steady voice; and Water Tongue Trills – A fun yet super effective way to smooth out your speech and refine your articulation,” said acting coach Shikhar Mishra.

What is the Water Tongue Trills exercise?

Water tongue trills is a vocal exercise aimed at improving speech clarity and pronunciation by enhancing tongue flexibility and coordination. According to Dr Karuna Malhotra, a cosmetologist and aesthetic physician from Cosmetic skin and homeo Clinic in New Delhi, “this exercise is especially beneficial for individuals who experience difficulties with pronunciation or those who want to refine their articulation”.

How to do it?

All you have to do is bend down, place your tongue inside a glass of water, and flutter it. Continue the exercise for a few minutes, said Mishra.

Alternatively, you can also take a sip of water while placing the tongue on the roof of your mouth, just behind the front teeth. “As you sip, try to produce a sound, such as ‘ra,’ while moving the tongue in a rhythmic, ‘thrilling’ motion against the roof of your mouth. The water acts as a resistance, strengthening the tongue muscles and helping you gain more control over your speech. Repeat this exercise for several minutes, focusing on maintaining fluid motion with the tongue,” said Dr Malhotra.

Does it work to improve your pronunciation?

Regular practice of this exercise can improve tongue agility, which is essential for clearer pronunciation of certain sounds, said Dr Malhotra.

“It also helps address any speech disorders caused by weak or uncoordinated tongue movements. For optimal results, consistency is key, and this exercise can complement other vocal training techniques or therapies for better speech,” said Dr Malhotra.
