Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bold initiative to address India’s rising obesity crisis has garnered widespread support from politicians across the country. Following his call to action in the monthly radio address 'Mann Ki Baat', Modi has appointed 10 prominent figures from various fields to lead a nationwide campaign against obesity.
BJP MP Anurag Thakur praised the initiative, stressing the importance of personal responsibility in combating the growing health issue. “At the right time, Prime Minister Modi raises such important societal issues. By appointing new community figures as brand ambassadors, he has expressed his concern over the increasing obesity rates. It’s not just about diet and exercise; it’s about fostering a healthier lifestyle to reduce the strain on our health system,” Thakur said, highlighting the link between reduced obesity and increased productivity.
Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande reflected on her recent conversation with Modi, noting his focus on the nation’s health. "A strong country is one that focuses on the health of its people. Modi ji's efforts to promote regular checkups, exercise, and yoga show his commitment to a healthier India," she remarked, praising the inclusion of influential figures in the campaign.
NCP spokesperson Mahesh Tapse emphasised the alarming rise in obesity rates, with India now surpassing the US as the obesity capital of the world. "PM Modi’s campaign is a step in the right direction, especially with the involvement of Opposition leaders. A fit population is essential for a productive nation," Tapse said, adding that the Prime Minister should also address the nation’s overall fitness.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his enthusiasm for the campaign and nominated 10 influential figures, including rhythmic gymnast Palak Kour Bijral, to further promote the cause. Bijral expressed her excitement, saying, "It’s an honour to be included in this campaign. This is a huge opportunity to raise awareness about tackling obesity and living healthier lives."
Bijral, who plans to nominate 10 more people to spread the message, emphasised the importance of physical activity and healthy eating. "Obesity occurs when we overeat, and the best way to handle it is through fitness. I urge everyone to engage in physical activity—start with walking if you haven’t been active, or challenge yourself to go to the gym," she said. She also stressed the importance of clean eating, advising people to avoid junk and fried foods.

Reflecting on her own journey, Bijral shared how she went from Jammu and Kashmir to Delhi and received recognition from the President of India. "I am extremely grateful for the support from Omar Abdullah and the opportunity to be part of this campaign. I want to raise awareness through social media and inspire the children I coach," she added.
Palak is dedicated to using her platform to share fitness tips, promote good nutrition, and empower others to live healthier, happier lives.
