Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) has emerged as a significant public health concern in India, closely linked to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. In response, the Union Health Ministry has launched updated guidelines and a comprehensive training manual to combat this escalating issue.

Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “India has taken the lead in recognizing NAFLD as a major non-communicable disease (NCD)... Out of 10, one to three people can have NAFLD.”

Dr. Amogh Dudhwewala, a Consultant in Gastroenterology at Yatharth Hospital, Noida Extension, provided key lifestyle tips for preventing NAFLD:

1. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Obesity is a major risk factor, so focus on balanced nutrition and regular physical activity.

2. Balanced Diet: Prioritize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Avoid excess fats, sugars, and refined carbs.

3. Exercise Regularly: At least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week can reduce liver fat.

4. Avoid Alcohol and Toxins: Limiting alcohol consumption and avoiding environmental toxins can prevent liver damage.

5. Get Vaccinated: Vaccinations for hepatitis A and B protect against liver infections.

6. Be Cautious with Medications: Some medications can affect the liver, so always consult your doctor.

7. Regular Check-ups: Screenings are essential for early detection, especially for high-risk individuals.
