While skiing in Kashmir, my instructor asked if I was Christian or Hindu. I replied, ‘I’m a Parsi Zoroastrian.’ He seemed confused, so I added, ‘Do you know Ratan Tata?’ Instantly, his face lit up, ‘Yes, of course. Ratan Tata – a great man.’

That is the legacy of Ratan Tata, a name that needs no introduction.

Ratan Naval Tata’s death on October 9, 2024, sent shockwaves around the world. Known for his humility, generosity, and simplicity, Ratan Tata won hearts far beyond the boardrooms. He shunned pomp and glamour, choosing instead to lead with quiet dignity and grace.

It is with great pride that we say, "Apro Ratan Tata."

His legacy as Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, and his steadfast commitment to integrity, philanthropy, and societal progress, will be cherished for generations. He exemplified the values of leadership and compassion, especially during the 26/11 Taj attacks, where he ensured that the families of victims, as well as his employees, were well taken care of.

Ratan Tata was more than a businessman; he was a beacon of ethics, a humanitarian who believed in uplifting everyone under his care. Often, when people ask about Parsis, the simplest way to explain is, "Do you know the Tatas? Do you know Ratan Tata?" His name became synonymous with both excellence and benevolence.

Born into a distinguished Parsi family on 28th December 1937, in Mumbai, Ratan Tata’s life was deeply rooted in the values of his heritage and the teachings of the Zoroastrian faith. Guided by the principles of Asha—truth, righteousness, and order—he carried forward the legacy of his forefathers who built the Tata Group on the foundations of service to society and unwavering ethical standards. He embodied the Zoroastrian motto of Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds. As Arzan Sam Wadia quotes, “A true legend is no more. Garothman Behest.”

Ratan Tata lived a life of humility and quiet strength. Though he often shunned the limelight, he remained steadfast in championing causes dear to him. His commitment to Zoroastrian values of compassion, philanthropy, and charity, combined with his progressive outlook, made him a bridge between tradition and modernity, both for the Tata Group and for India.

Ratan Tata’s love for dogs was a reflection of his deep compassion and kindness. He often went out of his way to care for stray dogs. The dogs have a special room in Bombay House – the headquarters of the Tatas. His genuine affection for animals showed the softer side of a man known for his towering achievements, making him all the more beloved.

As he embarks on his journey to Garothman Behest, the highest realm of paradise in Zoroastrian belief, his legacy will continue to inspire those who strive for a better, more

compassionate world. Ratan Tata’s life stands as a testament to the enduring values of his Parsi roots and Zoroastrian faith, marking the end of an era.

Ratan Tata was a role model for many, especially young Zoroastrians. Prof. Shernaz Cama, Founder-Director of Parzor, noted, “Mr. Tata has been a great supporter of the Parzor initiative for diaspora youth since its inception over a decade ago. He kindly addressed our Return to Roots youth at Bombay House, and many still remember it as one of the highlights of the 15-day program. We were also honoured to have him at the Parliament House, New Delhi, in March 2016 for the inauguration of the Everlasting Flame International Programme, the largest gathering of individuals celebrating Zoroastrian culture and heritage. Mr. Tata was one of our very special guests.”

Prof. Cama further shared a personal reflection, "He always responded personally to any letter sent. I remember writing to him after the 26/11 attacks on the Taj Hotel, and his reply was full of deep gratitude and compassion for those who had suffered and lost loved ones. That was Ratan Tata.”

Participants of the Return to Roots program echoed these sentiments, stating emotionally, "Garothman Behest, (Life after death concept) Ratan Tata. Thank you for supporting us and our mission. We will forever miss you."

For Parsis, Ratan Tata was more than just a business icon; he was a symbol of pride, a living embodiment of the Zoroastrian values and traditions. In a world where the Parsi community is small in number but vast in legacy, Ratan Tata stood tall, representing the strength, resilience, and compassion that define the Parsis.

He carried the flame of Zoroastrianism with quiet grace, showing the world what it means to live by the principles of Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds. His passing leaves a void that will be deeply felt, not just by those who knew him, but by the entire Parsi community. As we bid farewell to Apro Ratan, we find comfort in knowing that his spirit, his kindness, and his unwavering dedication to humanity will continue to inspire us all. He may have left this world, but his light will guide us forever.

Garothman Behest!
