As the holy month of Ramzan approaches, Muslim social activists and organisations across Maharashtra state are embarking on initiatives to help society and foster unity.
In Kolhapur, a city known for its religious and social harmony, the Zariya Foundation recently hosted a grand blood donation camp in preparation for Ramadan. Muslim activists rallied together for this event.
Explaining the purpose behind it, organizer Riyaz Subhedar stated, "Currently, there's a severe blood shortage. Many patients are losing their lives due to the lack of blood. We don't want anyone to suffer or lose their life because of this shortage. The importance of blood is a reality felt across society. With government hospitals struggling to meet the demand, we organized this blood donation camp out of a sense of duty and humanity."
He added, "Women participated in this blood donation camp alongside men. Our goal was to collect 100 units of blood. Every participant fulfilled their duty by donating blood. We are happy to share that in this camp, far more people donated blood than expected. Everyone fulfilled their responsibility by donating blood, with most donors from the Muslim community.”
The blood donation camp was organized in association with CPR Hospital and Mission Hospital, Miraj. Riyaz Subhedar mentioned, "It's been many years since a camp like this was held at the primary health center in Akbar Mohalla. This camp will help raise awareness and build confidence within the minority community."
Social worker Suresh Shipurkar visited the camp, while area councilor Mahejabina Subhedar, along with Niyaz Subhedar and Aseem Sheikh, congratulated all the medical staff and Subhedar Mancha friends. They also advocated for the continuity of such initiatives. Blood donation cards and certificates were given to all those who donated, and the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation extended special cooperation to ensure the camp's success.
Riyaz Subhedar shared the backstory of the Zariya Foundation: "One of our friends tragically died in an accident, leaving behind his wife and children. To support them, ten of us initially established this foundation in 2023. We provided them with a fixed amount every month."
