Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami made history as the fastest Indian bowler to take 200 wickets in men’s ODIs, achieving the milestone during the 2025 Champions Trophy Group A match against Bangladesh at Dubai International Stadium on Thursday.
Shami, 34, claimed figures of 5-53, with his 200th wicket coming in the form of Jaker Ali, who was dismissed in the 43rd over. The achievement came in just 104 matches, surpassing current chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s record of 200 wickets in 133 matches.
Shami also became the second-fastest ever to reach 200 wickets, sharing the spot with Pakistan’s Saqlain Mushtaq. Australia’s Mitchell Starc holds the record, having done so in 102 matches. Shami’s 5126 balls bowled to reach the milestone is the quickest for any bowler, ahead of Starc’s 5240.
The five-wicket haul was Shami’s sixth in ODIs, with only seven bowlers globally having more five-wicket hauls. His 60 wickets in ICC 50-over events also make him India’s top wicket-taker in these tournaments, surpassing Zaheer Khan.
Having returned to international cricket after recovering from ankle surgery, Shami’s performance against Bangladesh marked a triumphant return, cementing his place as one of India’s most successful ODI bowlers.
