Touted as the next Mary Kom of India, she is today a world champion and a role model for India’s young women.
She has lived her dream of becoming a world class boxer despite the societal pressures she faced as a girl.
Zareen, one of the four daughters of former footballer and a cricketer, took up boxing at the age of 13. She was introduced to the sport by her uncle who was a boxing coach. In her teenage years she trained at the SAI centre at Vishakapatnam.
She has never looked back since winning her first sub junior title at the age of 14 in 2010.
A year later she won the gold medal at the AIBA women’s junior and Youth world boxing championship. In 2015 came her first big breakthrough when as a 19-year-old she won the senior women’s national boxing championship.
Despite being overlooked for the 2020 olympic squad, Nikhat continued to work hard to pursue her dreams.
In May this year, she became only the fifth Indian to win a gold medal at the World Boxing championship. She was crowned the world champion defeating Thai Jitpong Jutamas 5-0 in the fly-weight category.
