Dr. Fatima Jalid, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, has been featured in the newly launched book She Is – 75 Women in Chemistry.
Beyond Black published the book in partnership with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), UK. It was unveiled on February 6 at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Bhopal.
“She Is―Women in Chemistry is the fourth book in the She Is series. The book is a collection of real-life stories of 75 women from India who are inventing and innovating in chemistry and its subsidiary fields.
According to the book's description by its authors Elsa Marie D'Silva and Supreet K Singh “Many of these women are from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in India, where access to opportunities is limited. They have endured, overcome, and managed to excel through sheer grit, determination, perseverance, and focus.”
The authors say, “Through this book, we seek to highlight their contribution, amplify their work, and make visible their leadership. We believe that these leadership stories of women across various fields give hope: If she can do it, others can, too! They are an observatory for young emerging minds wishing to explore, challenge, innovate, and create.”
The book is available for online sale at the price of Rs 1645.
Dr. Jalid’s work at NIT Srinagar has not only enhanced the research capabilities of the institution but also contributed significantly to the body of knowledge in the field of chemistry.
Her research involves the development of chemical compounds and processes that have implications in material science, environmental chemistry, and biotechnology.
By integrating interdisciplinary approaches, she has offered new insights into the behavior of chemical substances, making substantial contributions to both theoretical and applied chemistry.
In a field traditionally dominated by men, she has broken barriers and emerged as a role model for young women who aspire to pursue careers in STEM fields. As a mentor and guide, Dr. Jalid's work has helped to create an inclusive and supportive environment for female students and researchers at NIT Srinagar.
In addition to her research, Dr. Jalid often participates in initiatives aimed at empowering women in science. She has been involved in organizing workshops, seminars, and outreach programs to raise awareness about female representation in STEM.
Moreover, Dr. Jalid has worked on projects that aim to make scientific research more accessible and inclusive. She believes that science is a universal language that should not be confined to a select group of people. In her view, the pursuit of knowledge should be driven by curiosity and a desire to improve society, and this should be open to all, regardless of gender, background, or socio-economic status. By promoting these values, Dr. Jalid has fostered an environment where both male and female students feel equally encouraged to pursue careers in scientific research.
