Tarek Fatah was born in Pakistan but he called himself “Indian born in Pakistan and a “Punjabi born into Islam.”
He lived in Canada and was a great admirer of India. He was often seen pitted against Pakistani commentrators on Indian television debates.
He was a strong critic of sharia law, and advocated for a liberal and progressive form of Islam.
Fatah was a vocal critic of the Pakistani religious and political establishment. Fatah had even criticised the partition of India.
His death is mourned in India by people from all walks of life and #TarekFatah was trending on social media.
Actor Anupam Kher took to Twitter to pay tributes to Tarek Fatah. he posted pictures of his visit to Fatah's home in Toronto.
