Makkah: Grand Mosque imam Sheikh Ghazzawi’s ill health sparks wave of prayers

Sheikh Dr Faisal Jameel Ghazzawi, the imam (prayer leader) of grand mosque in Makkah, Al-Haram, and a noted Islamic preacher, is unwell and undergoing medical treatment. Sources close to him confirmed medical professionals are closely monitoring his condition, while his family and the mosque administration have requested privacy during this difficult time.

News of Sheikh Ghazzawi’s illness has resonated deeply with worshippers worldwide, leading to an outpouring of prayers and messages of support on social media. On February 24, a hashtag, #فيصل_غزاوي, began trending on X, as thousands of users sent heartfelt wishes for his recovery.

One user wrote, “O Allah, grant healing to our Sheikh Dr. #Faisal_Ghazzawi, protect him with Your care, and watch over him with Your guidance. O Allah, ease his condition, have mercy on his weakness, bring joy to his family and loved ones with his recovery and well-being, and restore him to leading prayers in Your Sacred House.”

Another posted, “O Allah, heal Your servant, Sheikh #Faisal_Ghazzawi. Protect him with Your care, and watch over him with Your guidance. O Allah, ease his condition, have mercy on his weakness and grant him the garment of health and well-being.”

A life dedicated to faith, scholarship

Born in 1965, Sheikh Ghazzawi has devoted his life to the study and teaching of the holy Qur’an. He specialised in Qur’anic recitation at Umm Al-Qura University, earning bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees. His academic work focused on Ibn Attiyah’s approach to recitations and Ibn Al-Mulqin’s writings on mosques.

His journey in academia began in 1989 when he became a lecturer at Umm Al-Qura University. By 2004, he had risen to the rank of associate professor. In addition to his scholarly contributions, Sheikh Ghazzawi has served as an imam in Makkah’s mosques since 1993, including at Al-Huda Mosque. In 2007, he was honoured with the position of imam at the Grand Mosque, leading millions in prayer over the years.
