In a shameful incident, a 35-year-old man arrested on charges of blasphemy was beaten to death by a mob inside the Nankana Sahib Police station in Punjab on Saturday.

The video of the mob overrunning the police station and killing the man who lay naked on the floor with glass pieces and lathis has been shared on social media by many Pakistanis.

According to express Tribune newspaper, the victim was accused of desecrating the Holy Quran and practising 'witchcraft',

He was handed over to the local police. However, as soon as the news of the incident spread in the area, a mob gathered at the police station. The crowd demanded the police hand over the accused.

According to a report in The Express Tribune, in a video that has surfaced on social media, the mob can be seen forcefully opening the main gate of the police station and entering the building.

Pakistan Punjab Inspector General of Police Usman Anwar on Saturday suspended two senior police officers for failing to prevent mob lynching.

A second video shows children - reportedly part of the mob - inside the police station with broken glass and overturned furniture strewn about. A police statement said that the IG has suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police of Nankana Sahib circle Nawaz Warak and Warburton SHO Firoz Bhatti. The IG also directed DIG Syed Muhammad Amin Bukhari of Internal Accountability Branch and DIG Raja Faisal of Special Branch to reach the spot and submit the investigation report.

The IG said, no one is allowed to take law in his hands, no matter how influential he may be. Strict departmental and legal action will be taken against those responsible for the incident as well as those guilty of negligence. According to Dawn news, Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi, chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC), condemned the incident and said that the manner in which the mob attacked the accused of blasphemy was regrettable. Ashrafi said in a tweet, the inhuman torture of a person accused of blasphemy and the attack on the police station is regrettable and condemnable.
