For a week, Yaqub Mansoori of Hamirpur had been camping outside the neonatal intensive care unit (ICU) of Maharani Lakshmibai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, for his just-born twin daughters.
The twins delivered by his wise Nazim were being looked after by the doctors as they needed support while he camped outside; least knowing what was in store for him.
On Friday night, when the hospital caught fire, Yaqub rushed to save the children not knowing his twins would perish in the fire.
More than 10 children died in a fire in a government hospital in the city.
Yaqub saved at least five children.
His father Aqoob Mansoori told media persons that his son was a hero for others while he lost his children.
Yaqub who has been running a food stall in Hamirpur town and his wife took turns to be around the NIUC for their firstborns.
When the fire broke out on Friday night, Yaqub Mansoori broke through a window, entered the ICU and saved as many newborns as he could.
The bodies of their twins were later identified on Saturday.
Nazima and Yaqub sat outside the hospital all day, dazed in grief of their loss.
On Friday, 10 infants died and 16 were injured in a fire that broke out at Maharani Lakshmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi at around 10:30 pm. According to officials, the fire started due to a faulty oxygen machine. The terrible fire in the hospital has not only dealt a blow not only to the lives of Yakub Mansoori and his wife but also to Sanjana Kumari, who gave birth to her first child.
Sanjana said, "My child burned to death in front of my eyes and I am helpless." And the helper stood and watched. The negligence of the hospital destroyed my dreams. I hadn't even held my baby yet.'
Santoshi Devi from Jalaun brought her child to the hospital due to complications during delivery. When the fire broke out, he got lost in the chaos and his body was later identified on Saturday. "I heard screams but my child was gone," he said.
